A post in one of the online window film forums prompted discussion among window film professionals.
Dean Mitchell, XPEL rep and head of Tinters for a Cause, posted:
"For those of you who've tinted Cybertruck Windshields, any issues with them cracking? We've just had 2 cases. One while prepping it, one with film being on for 2 days and left inside the shop!!??"
A total of 40 comments followed with some installers claiming no issues and some claiming many.
Some tinters are saying they're having issues with the Tesla Cybertruck's windshield.
"I stopped doing them when I started [seeing] defects in the windshield. The edge of the windshields has been cracked or chipped bad," says Randy Humphries, owner of Tint Works in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
On the other hand, Mike Norng, general manager at Automotive Film Specialists says he's tinted 50 and had no issues yet.
According to Tesla's website, the company's patented Armor glass "can resist the impact of a baseball at 70 mph or class 4 hail. Acoustic glass helps make the cabin as quiet as outer space."
A number of non-tint-related forums have reported the same issue, including cybertruckownersclub.com and Auto Evolution, which ran a story with the headline Tesla Cybertruck Might Be Bulletproof, but the Windshield Is Its Achilles Heel.
XPEL's Austin, Texas-based territory sales manager Marco Corzola says "These windows are very big and have a lot of flex. This reminds me of the micro-cracks issue on the Tesla Model 3 earlier models and window tint was being blamed, but in fact, it was a defect in the glass."
Group member Greg Wilkinson out of Santa Clarita, California says Tesla knows about the issue, which happened on his own Cybertruck and the company replaced it for free.
Window Film magazine reached out to Tesla for comment but had not heard back as of press time.
